Mahesh Babu is an Indian film actor.[1] He is the son of actor Krishna. He has worked in a number of critically and commercially successful films and has established himself as one of the lead actors in contemporary Telugu cinema.
He started his film career as a child actor in his father’s film Needa. He made his debut as a lead actor in 1999 with Rajakumarudu (రాజ కుమారుడు) and then went on to star in films such as Murariమురారి) (2001), Okkadu (ఒక్కడు) (2003), Athadu (అతడు) (2005) and Pokiriపోకిరి) (2006). Early life
Mahesh Babu was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to actor Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna and Smt. Indira Devi on August 9, 1974. He has four siblings: Ramesh Babu, Padmavathi, Manjula and a younger sister, Priyadarshini. He did his schooling at St Bede’s in Chennai and obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. Mahesh Babu acted in seven of his father’s films as a child.
Personal life
Mahesh dated Bollywood actress and former Miss India Universe Namrata Shirodkar for two years. She was his co-star in the movie Vamsi. They got married on February 10, 2005,[2] and have a son named Gautham Krishna.[3]Career
1999-2004
Mahesh Babu debuted in 1999 with the K. Raghavendra Rao film Raja Kumarudu for which he earned the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut.[4]In 2000, Mahesh appeared in Y.V.S Chowdary‘s Yuvaraju and Vamsi. The latter was a flop.
In 2001, he starred with Sonali Bendre in Krishna Vamsi‘s Murari. His performance earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award. His next movie Takkari Donga was a flop.[citation needed]
Later that year, he starred with Arthi Agarwal in Bobby, directed by Sobhan, which ws also a failure.
His next film Okkadu (2003) opposite Bhoomika Chawla, produced by M.S. Raju and directed by Gunasekhar, was critically acclaimed and the biggest box-office success of that year whilst fetching him his first Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu).[5] In the same year, he appeared in Teja‘s Nijam[6] In 2004, he paired up with Amisha Patel in S. J. Suryaah‘s Naani which was flopped miserably. It was the Telugu version of the Tamil film, New. Later that year, he again appeared in Gunasekhar‘s Arjun which a dud as well. which was again a commercial failure.
2005-present
His 2005 film with Trisha Krishnan, titled Athadu and directed by Trivikram Srinivas, was declared a sensational hit in India as well as the USA and became one of the highest grossers of the year in Tollywood[disambiguation needed] and his performance earned him his second Nandi Award for Best Actor.[7] He next appeared in the action film Pokiri directed and produced by Puri Jagannadh which grossedIn 2007, he appeared in Surender Reddy‘s Athidhi with Bollywood actress Amrita Rao which was a commercial hit.[12] The film opened with a gross collection of
He next signed a film with Trivikram Srinivas titled Khaleja (ఖలేజా). Mahesh Babu had planned to take a gap of six months after Athidhi. Due to unexpected circumstances, the film was postponed several times and took two years to be completed. Khaleja was released on 7 October 2010.[14] The film received mixed reviews.
His next film Dookudu (దూకుడు) by Sreenu Vaitla is scheduled to release in August 2011.
He was supposed to work with Tamil director Shankar for the Telugu remake of the Bollywood hit 3 Idiots. But Mahesh opted out of the project as he was already committed to do other films at the same time. He was also supposed to work with another ace director from Tamil cinema, Maniratnam, for a period film based on one of the Tamil great books “Ponniyin Selvan“. But Mani has shelved this project for now.
